Rothay Manor

About Rothay Manor

Husband and wife team Jamie & Jenna Shail knew that Rothay Manor was special the moment they set eyes on the Grade II-listed hotel, with its beautiful black and white Regency façade being so unique to the traditional Lake District landscape of slate. Having spent 13 years owning and operating ski chalets in France, Rothay provided them with the perfect foundations to bring their honed hospitality skills back to the UK and, being a passionate cook himself, Jamie was inspired by the area and its reputation for being home to some of the finest restaurants.

The pair are passionate outdoor explorers and when not at the hotel, you will often find them on the ski slopes or, closer to home, are often found roaming the fells in their free time, with their two spaniels. The pair opened eight new dog-friendly rooms as well as a dedicated dog washroom as an extra detail for their guests. In the bedrooms, guests can find dedicated ‘Rothay Rambles’ walking guides, with five routes each tried and tested by the Shail’s themselves and designed to showcase Ambleside’s famous and hidden spots.

Food is at the heart of the hotel, and the award-winning restaurant takes inspiration from the wild local landscape – inspired by Jamie & Jenna’s many years living in France, where eating out meant a place to enjoy the company of loved ones, locally sourced food and delicious wines.

“For us, it’s having a small, intimate team, who care about our guests, who are genuinely interested in each and every person who walks through the door, and who want nothing more than to help people to have the best possible experience with us.”
